Studio:

There are two studio spaces at Carter equipped with individual student portfolio lockers and painting racks. There are also kiln facilities and a photo lab shared by both studios.

Class sizes range from approximately 18-24 students.

While the studio spaces also serve as exhibition spaces, the school's main gallery spaces are located on the main floor in the lobby and lower ground level.

    The art program strives to encourage and develop individual technical skills while challenging and broadening the students' ways of thinking. Over the years of study, students build a professional portfolio through their exploration of both traditional and non traditional media.

    Studio and theory classes, department exhibits, critiques, special guests and outreach community projects are integrated at every level.

    AVI 1D2, AWD 1O1 VISUAL ARTS (grade 9) CREDIT: 2

    In this foundation course, students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various media through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques and styles. Methods of analysis, criticism, and art appreciation will be incorporated throughout the course as students learn the characteristics of particular historical art periods, selections of Canadian art, and the appreciation of other cultures. Students will be required to maintain a sketchbook and a journal which will be evaluated on a regular basis. Excursions and gallery visits enrich the program. Portfolios will be presented at the end of the course.

     

    AVI 2O1, AWD 2O1 VISUAL ARTS (grade 10) CREDIT: 2

    The grade 10 comprehensive program is designed to develop skills and continue to reinforce student's working knowledge of the formal elements and principles of design. The program emphasizes technical competence in drawing and will use a variety of fine arts and applied arts media to facilitate the expression of personal vision. Critical abilities, written and verbal communication skills using the language of art are further developed. Students will be challenged and encouraged to pursue personal interests through their work. Sculpture and design studies round out the studio component which is augmented with art history and appreciation. Careers in arts and arts related areas are also explored. Guests and gallery visits enrich the program.

    AVI 3O1, AWD 3O1 VISUAL ARTS (grade 11) CREDIT: 2

    The fine arts component of the program includes the following areas of study: drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography. The applied design component consists of information design, environmental and social design, illustration and a special interest unit. Students will continue to build their technical skills within each area of study. Several independent projects will allow for concentration in individual media interests. Critical analysis, theory and appreciation are integrated in each component of the course. Gallery visits and guest artists enrich the program.

    AVI 4A0 VISUAL ARTS (grade 12) CREDIT:2

    In the first term the program will focus on the exploration of personal psychology through drawing, painting, printmaking and a special design unit (based on department and school collaborative projects). In the second term, students will create a thematic body of work which explores a personal interest. Media concentration will be selected individually from either the fine arts or design areas. Students will be required to give an innovative presentation of their independent portfolio work at the end of the program. Photography and Life drawing are also key units of study included in the second term. History, including the completion of the 'Key Works', modern appreciation, and critical analysis skills are reinforced throughout all areas of study. Gallery visits, excursions and guest artists enrich the program.

    AVI 0A0 VISUAL ARTS (OAC) CREDIT: 1

    The program enables students to formulate and resolve artistic problems as well as further cultivate their skills for literary and verbal communication. In addition to drawing, students select one discipline to explore in depth. The formal written proposal is followed by independent production

    of the intended body of work. The course is comprised of equal studio and theory components. Each student will be required to prepare a creative interdisciplinary presentation which includes both their portfolio as well as their information file at the end of the course. Art Appreciation and theory will support the independent studies with focus on contemporary artists. Excursions and guest artists enrich the program.

    OPEN TO ALL SENIOR ART STUDENTS (grades 11, 12 & OAC):

    AVD 4A0 INTEGRATED ARTS COURSE CREDIT: 1

    This special series course is intended for students who have a keen interest in the area of information design and wish to broaden their experience. It has been designed to further the student's photographic skills and to expose the student to other aspects of the world of communication and design. This course offers a practical and diverse commercial art experience particularly useful for those students interested in pursuing a career in the world of design and advertising. The main project will be the production of the school's yearbook.

    Prerequisite: Visual Arts background recommended, but not mandatory . Acceptance into the course will be based on a personal interview with the course instructor.
